Soil Surveys - what are they? The U. S. Department of Agriculture has been publishing soil surveys since 1899. These publications include soil maps and interpretations that provide guidance to farmers, ranchers, and other landowners regarding soil use, management, and conservation.

Soil Quality - this site from the USDA-NRCS' Soil Quality Institute provides a good discussion on soil quality. Included in the information are answers to the following questions: What are the functions of soils? How do you assess soil quality? and What are indicators of soil quality?
