2004 WINTER MAPSS MEETING
Wednesday January 28, 2004
Tan Tara Resort

Interesting presentations were given preceding the meeting

President Leon Thompson called the meeting to order in Room 72/73 Tan-Tar-A Resort at 2:30pm. It was moved (Kevin Godsey) and 2nd’d (Chuck Harwood) to dispense with the reading of the minutes. They were made available to the group in written format on a back table in the meeting room.

Treasurer Bill Pauls gave the treasurer report. We have a total of $5,826.8 4 on hand in 3 accounts (savings, checking, and CD) at the Mizzou Credit Union in Columbia, Missouri. Bill encouraged everyone to check the website membership list or the hard copy list here at the meeting and bring their dues up to date. $10 per year for full members, $100 lifetime; $5 for affiliates and associates. We have a $10,000 obligation to the Agronomic Science Foundation. They are coordinating the Smithsonian Soils Exhibit/State Soil Monolith Project. We have collected $6,700 thus far and delivered that amount to the ASF.

We raised an additional $800 at this current meeting and added $200 from the MAPSS treasury. I will write a February ‘04’ check for $1000 to the ASF. That will bring our total paid to $7,700. The remaining $2,300 of the $10,000 total pledge will be paid over the next FY. This early pledge/payment resulted in Menfro being the sole representative state soil monolith in the Smithsonian as advertisement for the entire project, for the next two years. At which time it will be joined by the remaining 50 states for the entire monolith display/ Smithsonian Soils Exhibit project. Menfro should go up at the Smithsonian next to the Hope Diamond and the IMAX theatre in the next 3 months. The treasurers report was approved.

Dues were discussed. Lifetime dues were established by constitutional amendment as passed by the membership. Moved by Wyn Kelley & 2nd’d by Kevin Godsey.

Committee reports were given by all committee chairpersons.

Kevin Godsey & Mike Chalfant were given a round of applause for recertifiying.

The Nominating Committee of Dennis Meinert/Kim Worth/Melvin Simmons presented the slate of candidates for office for 2004. The election was held.
