To all MAPSS members and interested parties:

The MAPSS executive board is working on scheduling the Winter MAPSS meeting in conjunction with the Natural Resource Conference at Tan-Tar-a. The NRC is a series of informational presentations based on research in many fields, including soils. Professionals from many different natural resource fields are in attendance. They come from all over Missouri and other states. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other professionals, learn what they are doing and share with them what we are doing. Many of them are potential customers for our expertise. The meeting is planned for Wednesday January 30th through Friday February 2nd.

For MAPSS to be an affiliate group for this conference we need to inform the organizers of our plans by mid-October. This includes when we will hold the MAPSS meeting, the number of attendees and the number of rooms needed for overnight stay. We already have a date and time for the meeting and a conference room reserved. We have set the date for the meeting on Wednesday the 30th beginning at 9:00. We should be done with the day's schedule by 5:00. This will give the MAPSS attendees an hour to prepare for the smoker, paper presentations and booths. MAPSS will have a booth during this period also. Further information on the NRC can be found on the website: www.mnrc.org.

What we need to know is if you're planning on attending and which nights you will need accommodations, specifically rooms. Please respond to this article by e-mailing Dennis Meinert at nrmeind@mo.state.us or dennismm@fidnet.com or calling at (573) 860-3700 or (573) 237-5081.

MAPSS FALL/WINTER MEETING
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 30, 2002
TAN TARA RESORT

I cannot locate the file, which I recorded the minutes of this meeting. I have reconstructed this record from memory the following day. If anyone has additions or corrections, I welcome them.

I was unable to remember who made motions and seconds. I beg your indulgence and forgiveness. It is with regret that I offer my resignation if any member deems that appropriate AND will offer to replace me at the behest of the executive board. Otherwise, let's let bygones be bygones and I will try to do better in the future. I think I just forgot to save the damn thing. Or, my laptop got shut by mistake -duh! Anyway….

Outgoing President Jerry Gott called the meeting to order.

Dave Skaer encouraged all members to behave themselves and conduct themselves in a professional manner while attending the Natural Resources Conference.

Leon Thompson, executive board member gave a summary of the last executive board meeting.

Bill Pauls gave a treasurer report. We have a total of approx. $9000 on hand in 3 accounts (savings, checking, and CD) at the Mizzou Credit Union in Columbia, Missouri.

We made approximately $1080 at this meeting from 3 sources; Dues, Sale of MAPSS merchandise, and the Auction. Colonel Skaer is to be reprimanded for his behavior and congratulated for the success of the auction.

The organization approved the following items of business:

  • Sponsorship of the State Vocational Agriculture Soil Judging Team by purchase of a clothing item for the winning team and coach designating the team as state champion. Executive board will authorize appropriate amount of expenditure.

  • Appointed a committee of Bill Pauls & Dan Childress to investigate expanding the MAPSS web site.

  • Appointed a committee of MU alums headed by Fred Young to draft a positive letter of inquiry to the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources concerning the restructuring of the department. It will be sent to as many levels of the University Administrative System as possible. This restructuring involved the elimination of the Soils curriculum at the Department level.

  • Election of Officers was held. Leon Thompson was elected Vice President/President-Elect. Rod Taylor was elected as member-at-large to serve on the executive board. Following the election the members gave outgoing President, Jerry Gott, a warm round of applause as he left the Presidential podium and turned over the gavel to the incoming President, Dennis Meinert.

  • The meeting was adjourned. Members enjoyed several presentations by speakers on an assortment of interesting topics.

All members thoroughly enjoyed what has become a much anticipated event, the MAPSS Auction starring the one, the only, Colonel Skaer. The Colonel once again lived up to the pre-auction hype making the auction not only a financial success (with $200 being raised), but a laugh success as well. I sincerely hope no one went away permanently traumatized. Congratulations to Caryl Radatz for being the highest bidder of the evening by purchasing a float trip offered by president-elect Leon. A big second highest bidder thanks goes to Dennis Potter for his savy purchases, and to all of the bidders and providers of auction items. Well done.

The meeting was adjourned. Members volunteered to work in the MAPSS booth at the Conference later in the evening and the following day. Thanks again for your volunteer spirit. I think the booth was an unqualified success. We made many contacts, provide a good deal of information and had a great time interacting with our natural resource partners from many disciplines.

Special thanks for a job well done to Dennis Meinert, for his vision & hard work that made this all happen in the first place. Good job Dennis.

Please email me with, what I am sure, are things I have misrepresented, distorted, neglected or just plain completely forgot. Thank guys and gals. See you next time.

    Respectfully (albeit possibly inaccurately) submitted,
Bill Pauls MAPSS (egg on his face) secretary/treasurer
