MAPSS Annual Meeting
Osage Beach, Missouri
February 4th 2009
Meeting was called to order by President Bill Pauls. He
welcomed all members and guests. Bill first recognized DNR & NCSS soil
scientists and their service. Bill then read a letter from former SSS
Bruce Thompson recognizing the great importance of DNR in the completion of the
soil survey. Caral Radatz showed slides and a movie
highlighting the accomplishments and activities MAPSS was involved with this
year. Clayton Lee then gave a presentation of
activities and plans for the upcoming year including: Bill gave a small tribute to Pat Jones (MAPSS
member and first female SS from MU) Bill Recognized George Simmons the eldsest
Missouri Soil Scientist that made it to the meeting
DNR Tribute ---------- John Preston, Clayton Lee, and Dr Randy
Miles spoke about the value and greatness of the DNR soils program, what it
meant to Missouri and how great of a loss it is. Caryl Radatz, Bill Pauls, and Clayton Lee
presented all present DNR soil scientists with a present from MAPSS. A

Meeting------------ Bill Pauls opened the meeting and thanked
everyone for making it a great year and the EC for helping him accomplish so
much. Treasurer - Clayton Lee Presented the
Treasurer's report, budget, and finance committee report Old Business Support of FFA soil judging, State
Envirothon, & SW Regional Envirothon State FFA - Motion to
approve support W Kelley 2nd M Abney - All Approved

State FFA - Motion
to approve support Dr R Miles 2nd M Abney - All Approved New Business Support for the National Collegiate Soil
Judging contest. The group wants to support in some way if
needed. It is unsure as of yet what if anything will be asked for.
The group decided to allow the EC to make a judgment if and how support will be
supplied. George Davis, (Presedent of the
Missouri Association of Geologists and former DNR soil scientist) Made a
motion to develop a joint memo of understanding between the two organizations.
Group agreed and asked George to look into what it would take and planned to
proceed when more is known. Mark Abney posed a question as to the state
of a scholarship as discussed at last years meeting. MAPSS Secretary R Tucker stated the item was
shelved due to current insufficient funds. After a lengthy discussion from
several members as to the pros cons, how it could be done, and who it could be
done for it was decided that it would be re-examined by the EC as soon as
possible. Grant Butler presented the proposed
changes to the constitution and by-laws t President Pauls called for the vote on
constitutional amendment and election of officers. Caryl Radatz presented the outcome of the

Clayton's
idea for MAPSS to author a book with input from all members as a fund raising
idea
A committee was formed to look into how to proceed and to organize the effort,
consisting of
J Preston, T Dewitt, F Young, C Lee, & D Skaer with input from R Miles
George retired in 1978
and is now 81 years old
Dr R Miles made a motion to approve the report R Rouse 2nd - All
approved
President William Pauls passed the "gavel" to new incoming President Caryl Radatz
President Caryl Radatz closed the meeting and thanked everyone for coming.
